Check a VAT-inclusive invoice without counting tax twice

Fictional invoice · narrated explanation · English captions · about 93 seconds

Work through a fictional tax-inclusive invoice: ZAR 1,150.00 gross contains ZAR 150.00 VAT at its printed 15% rate. Adding that VAT again would produce ZAR 1,300.00. Arithmetic illustration only; it does not determine legal tax treatment or configure accounting tax codes.

1. Included tax is already in the total

This fictional invoice states that its prices include VAT. The gross amount is one thousand one hundred fifty rand, including one hundred fifty rand of VAT. Adding that VAT again would produce one thousand three hundred rand. The key is reading the invoice's layout before choosing the totals calculation.

2. Recalculate the included amount

The two gross lines are nine hundred twenty and two hundred thirty rand. They sum to one thousand one hundred fifty. Using the printed fifteen percent rate, the included VAT is the gross amount times zero point fifteen, divided by one point fifteen. That gives one hundred fifty rand. Subtract it from the gross amount to get a one thousand rand net amount.

3. Compare layout, reading and calculation

Confirm that the invoice really states tax inclusive prices. Then inspect its printed rate, tax amount and payable total. Compare what the reader extracts with the source. This example's expected answer was calculated from known structured values. It is not a live OCR run or a promise about another invoice.

4. Keep the scope of the check clear

Download the fictional PDF and answer key using the link below. The calculation checks the rate printed on this example. It does not determine whether that tax rate applies legally, and it does not configure tax codes in your accounting system. Those are separate review decisions before you use or post the figures.
