Check an invoice's math,
line by line.
Drop a PDF or a phone photo. We check every line, the subtotal, the tax and the total, and tell you in plain words where it doesn't add up.
We keep your file for 7 days so you can save it to a free workspace, then delete it automatically.
What gets checked
- Every line. Quantity times rate has to equal the line's amount. When one doesn't, the result names it: "Line 3 is off by $75.00", with what it should be.
- The lines against the subtotal. "The lines are €1.00 off the subtotal", with both figures.
- The total. Subtotal, less any discount, plus shipping, fees and tax, has to equal the total printed on the invoice.
- The tax. VAT against the rate the invoice prints, and several tax lines against the tax total.
Invoices are read the way they are laid out. Prices that include tax, or a delivery charge listed as a line and already in the subtotal, are not flagged for it.
Why check an invoice's math
Arithmetic errors on invoices are usually small and easy to miss: a quantity changed after the total was worked out, a line left out of the subtotal, VAT worked out on the wrong amount. Checking by hand means a calculator and every line. Here it takes up to a minute, and a flagged line is highlighted in the table beside your page, so you can see it before you pay.
You also get every line as a spreadsheet, Excel or CSV. For how the lines are read, see the line item extraction guide; for how the reading scores, see the accuracy benchmark.
Questions
What does it check?
That each line's quantity times rate equals its amount; that the lines add up to the subtotal; that the subtotal, less any discount, plus shipping, fees and tax, equals the total; that the VAT matches the rate printed on the invoice; and that several tax lines add up to the tax total.
What can't it tell me?
It tells you the invoice disagrees with itself. It cannot tell you whether a rate is the one you agreed to, whether the goods arrived, or whether you have paid this invoice before. A workspace checks new invoices against your past ones for duplicates.
What if a line has no quantity or rate?
A line with only an amount still counts toward the subtotal; there is just no quantity times rate to check on it. If nothing on the invoice can be checked, the result says so and asks you to check the figures yourself.
Can the check be wrong?
The check is only as good as the reading. A misread figure can make a correct invoice look wrong, so when something is flagged, compare the highlighted line with your page, which is shown beside it. A blurred photo reads worse than a PDF.
Is it really free?
Yes. Check up to 3 invoices a day with no account and no card, and download the figures as Excel or CSV. A free workspace gives you 25 invoices a month.
