Dext vs AutoEntry: subscription or credits for bookkeeping capture?

Pick AutoEntry if you want to pay per document in credits, from $13 a month for 50, with unlimited users and clients on every plan, arithmetic validation on line-item capture, duplicate flagging, and a long list of Sage integrations. Pick Dext if you want one subscription priced by users and documents, from $25.21 a month billed annually for 250 documents and 5 users, with capture by WhatsApp as well as app, email and upload, approval workflows for bills, and 36+ integrations. For firms on Sage, AutoEntry (sold by Sage) is the natural choice; for high document counts without line items, Dext’s allowance goes further.

We make InvoiceParser Pro, a third product, and say where it fits below. Every fact about Dext and AutoEntry was read on its maker’s own website on 4 October 2026, and neither was tested hands-on. How we compared.

Dext in short

Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) is bookkeeping automation for small businesses and accounting firms. Documents arrive by phone, email, WhatsApp or upload; Dext extracts, categorises and publishes them to the accounting system, with approval workflows and supplier rules.

One business plan scales with users and documents. Line-item, bank-statement and supplier-statement extraction come with small monthly allowances and are otherwise add-ons.

Pick Dext if

  • Most of your documents need only header data, so 250 documents a month on one plan goes a long way.
  • You want an approval workflow, with amount thresholds, before anything is published.
  • Your team or clients send documents by WhatsApp.

AutoEntry in short

AutoEntry, from Sage, captures invoices, receipts, statements and expense claims and posts them to the accounting system. It is sold on its own or as part of Sage for Accountants, and priced in credits: a document costs one or more credits depending on its type.

With line-item capture it reads each line’s description, unit price and quantity and applies arithmetic validation rules, so an invoice whose figures do not agree is not posted.

Pick AutoEntry if

  • You are on Sage, or run a practice with many clients and users and want neither to cost extra.
  • You want each line checked arithmetically before posting and will pay 2 credits for an invoice with lines.
  • Your volume varies month to month and you want unused credits to roll over for 90 days.

The differences that matter

How you pay

Dext charges a subscription sized by users and documents; past the document limit, uploads wait for the next bill date or an upgrade. AutoEntry charges credits: an invoice is 1 credit, 2 with line items, a bank statement page 3, with a credit overdraft for busy months and 90 days of roll-over. Users and clients are unlimited on every AutoEntry plan.

Line items and the arithmetic check

Both read line items, and both charge for them: Dext includes five line-item documents a month and sells more as an add-on; AutoEntry doubles the credits for an invoice with lines. AutoEntry states that it validates the arithmetic of what it captures and will not post an incorrect invoice; Dext’s pages do not describe an arithmetic check of each invoice.

Approvals and accounting systems

Dext has approval workflows for bills of up to five stages; AutoEntry lists multiple-level approval for expenses. Both publish to QuickBooks, Xero and Sage; AutoEntry adds FreeAgent and a deeper Sage line-up, and Dext adds WhatsApp capture and e-commerce connections.

How we compared

  • Every fact about Dext and AutoEntry (what each does, its published prices, plans and limits) was read on that vendor’s own website on 4 October 2026. The pages are listed under Sources below. Review sites and other comparisons were not used as sources.
  • Neither product was tested hands-on for this page: nothing here measures how well either reads documents, and neither vendor’s own accuracy claims are repeated. Where a vendor does not publish a price or a feature, the page says “not published” or “not described” rather than guessing.
  • We make InvoiceParser Pro, so it appears only as a third option, marked as ours, with its limits. Its facts come from its own pricing page and its published benchmark: 181 synthetic test documents run through live production on 3 October 2026, where 96.1% of documents had every key header field right. The method and every miss are on the accuracy benchmark page; it is our test set, not your documents, and it is not compared with any other vendor’s figures.
  • Prices and features change. Confirm them with the vendor before you buy, and if something here is out of date, tell us at support@invoiceparserpro.com and we will correct it.

Dext vs AutoEntry: questions buyers ask

Is Dext or AutoEntry cheaper?

It depends on your mix. AutoEntry starts at $13 a month for 50 credits (an invoice is 1 credit, 2 with line items). Dext starts at $25.21 a month billed annually for 250 documents and 5 users, with line items beyond five a month charged extra.

Does AutoEntry check invoice math?

Yes, on line-item capture: AutoEntry says it uses arithmetic validation rules and never lets you post an incorrect invoice. Dext’s pages do not describe an arithmetic check of each invoice.

Which works better with Sage?

AutoEntry is sold by Sage, is part of Sage for Accountants, and connects to Sage 50 (UK and Ireland, Canada, US) and Sage Accounting. Dext also publishes to Sage 50 and Sage Accounting.

Do Dext and AutoEntry have a free plan?

No. Dext has a 14-day free trial without a card; AutoEntry’s trial includes 25 free credits.

Where does InvoiceParser Pro fit against Dext and AutoEntry?

InvoiceParser Pro is for supplier invoices: every plan, including a free one, reads line items and checks the arithmetic and duplicates, and paid plans push to QuickBooks Online, Xero or Zoho Books. It does not connect to Sage or MYOB and has no mobile app, so for Sage practices and receipt capture, Dext or AutoEntry fits better.
